Lester Bert Verhoeff was born in Gove County, Kansas. It was there he met his wife, Florence "Lois" Anderson, also a Gove County native, and they were married. They had one son, Elton Elwood Verhoeff.

Lester and Lois, along with several other family members, moved to the Wet Mountains of Colorado, where they established a homestead. Other family included Lester's brother, Lyman and his wife, Dora Dyke Verhoeff, Lois' sister Grace with her husband William (Bill) Bader. Lyman and Lester's mother, Nellie Huigen, as well as her sisters Alice and Jennie also had homesteads.

Life in the Wet Mountains was very difficult, and eventually the families moved on. Lois and Lester joined Lyman and Dora in Anacortes, Washington, where they purchased working shares in the Anacortes Plywood Mill. They were still living there in the early 1950's.

Eventually, Lois and Lester returned to Colorado - south of Denver in the Littleton area, and lived there until their death. They were joined there by their son Elton and his family.
