Lazerus Withers Robertson was born 3 March 1826 in Wake County, North Carolina to Jarrett Robertson and Susannah Ferguson. He married Mary H Jones who was born 2 October 1824 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Lazerus and Mary lived first in Gibson, Gibson County, Tennessee where Lazerus worked as a blacksmith. Between 1857 & 1860 they moved to Strawberry Township, Lawrence County, Arkansas where Lazerus continued to work as a blacksmith. Together they had a large family: twins Susan D (~1848-1872) & James Henry (~1848-1942), Thomas M (~1849-1867), Martha Annette (Mrs Asa Martin Speickelmier) (1852-1932), Lucinda D (~1854-?), Mary A (~1857-?), John Hue (1860-1897), twins Emma C (1863-1868) & Stephen C (1863-1925), and George Caleb (~1864-1911).

Despite the size of his family, when the war came, Lazerus heeded the call. At the age of 39, he became a proud member of Company F, 45th Arkansas Cavalry, Confederate States of America. This was a mounted Regiment also known as McCray's Brigade. The unit was organized in the fall of 1864 to go on Price's Raid into Missouri and Kansas, where they intended to disrupt Missouri State elections and make advances. After some initial successes, they were subsequently driven back into Arkansas. According to "Forty-Fifth Arkansas Confederate Cavalry" by Desmond Walls Allen, L W Robertson surrendered on 5 June 1865. Price's Raid was the final significant Southern operation west of the Mississippi River. Its failure helped reelect Abraham Lincoln and was decisive in establishing Federal control over Missouri.

About a decade after the war, Lazerus' wife Mary died. Lazerus and some of the children moved out to Oregon, settling in Ashland, Jackson County where Lazerus worked as a blacksmith. In 1910 Lazerus was living with his daughter Martha and her husband in East Cedar, Washington County. On 2 March 1918 Lazerus died in Portland, Oregon. Lazerus is buried with his son, Stephen C Robertson.
