Hettie Allred Currie, 92, a long-time resident of Midland, Texas, but more recently of Pasadena and Houston, Texas, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2013, in Galveston, Texas, her daughters at her side.

Hettie was preceded in death by her parents, Anne Elizabeth Barton Allred and Thomas Samuel Allred, and by her husband, Robert Roy Currie.

She is survived by her daughters Hettie Myrle Allsup, husband Daniel B. Allsup, Loyce Sherrill "Sherri" Guichard, husband Robert Guichard, and Aisha Maxine Currie May, husband Greg May. Hettie also leaves behind grandchildren Claudette Guichard Smith, Christina Guichard Simon, Joshua Guichard, Mia M. Casados and great grandchildren Kurtis Smith, Trevor Smith, Trenton Smith, Garrett Simon, Brooklynn Simon, Morgynn Simon and C J Simon.

Hettie graduated high school in San Angelo, Texas, and went on to earn a beautician's license before marriage to Rob Currie. Although her primary career was homemaker to Rob and three small children she pursued a love of airplanes, earning a pilot's license and during the War earned the ranking of Second Lieutenant, Civil Air Patrol. She and Rob were instrumental in the complete rebuilding of a small air craft, Hettie taking the pieces of old cloth skin of the airplane to cut new pieces and sewed them up to become the skin of the aircraft. She was a member of the Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of Nile, a charter member of the Golf Course Road Church then Westside Church of Christ in Midland. She was an excellent and meticulous seamstress who made most of the clothing for her three little girls and passed on to them the skills and joys of sewing. Hettie's hobbies of painting and photography won several first place prizes.

After Rob passed away in 1978, Hettie started a new chapter in her life holding several jobs that included working as a ward clerk in the emergency room, a reading resource person for an elementary school, and went from volunteer to full-time in the Learning Center of the Midland Christian School. She loved the challenges of creating games from empty boxes and seeing the success of students. Most of all she loved the students.

In 2001 Hettie moved to Pasadena, Texas, to be closer to her daughters Hettie and Aisha. She joined the Burke Road Church and found new friends in the life group she joined. She often joined Hettie and Aisha in their many social activities resulting in a number of people that referred to Hettie as their "Other Mother". She took great joy in each friend she made and especially if they were in need and she could help them. From Pasadena Hettie made the move into Houston to live with her daughters and then to the Atria at Westchase, an independent living apartment. Hettie made friends everywhere from the close knit group at the Water Ah Chi and Chair Yoga classes at The Wellness Center, to the lovely group of ladies at the Atria. She was a charter member of the Toastmaster's club for the Association of Chief Engineers, and a member in several other Toastmaster clubs. Her humorous remarks and table topics will be missed by many.

Despite the pain of rheumatoid osteo-arthritis and congestive heart failure, Hettie remained gracious and pleasant to all, still enjoying corny silly jokes, and quick to share her advice to all: Learn everything you can, plan for the future, enjoy today, and share your love of family and friends.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. with a service to follow at 6:30 p.m. in The Chapel of Grand View Funeral Home. Flowers received there will be transported to Midland for inclusion in services there. Family will then receive friends on Friday, November 1, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy, Midland, TX 79701 with a graveside service to follow at 3:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park, 4616 N. Big Spring, Midland, TX 79705. Online memorial tributes may be placed at www.grandviewfunerals.com
