NICKERSON - Virgil M. Nelson, 86, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2013. He was born Oct. 13, 1927, at Sterling, the son of Peter and Elsie Liggett Nelson.

He was a member of Salem Community Church of the Brethren, a veteran of the Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and U.S. Army. Virgil was a farmer and stockman in the Nickerson community.

On April 7, 1946, he married Fern Marie Krauter in Hutchinson. She died Sept. 28, 2010.

Survivors include: a daughter, Kathy Theede and husband Roger of Nickerson; a sister, Francis Fogle of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Johnson.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor George D. Hinton officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
