Peter was born December 30, 1942 in Newark, New Jersey. He was taken as a state ward into their home by Wellington “Well” and Claire (Rehagen) French in 1953 when he was 10 years old and adopted, with no objection from his natural mother, when he was in High School.
He graduated from Parochial Grade School and Plainfield High School. At graduation from high school he was the recipient of a $1600 scholarship to Dartmouth, which he maintained through four years of college. He then taught English for one year and decided that was not to be his life. He went on to Claremont College in California for his Master’s Degree and Doctorate in English and Writing. He also attended the University of Dijon, in London, England.
As a result of five years of hard work and traveling to London (via Sterling, Connecticut) to do the research, he wrote and published in 1972 – the book “John Dee, the World of an Elizabethan Magus”. He dedicated the book to his parents. The book was first published in London, England, in 1975 and has since been published in the Italian and Japanese languages. It is the only book published on John Dee as a reference work and is still being published in England.
These years were wonderful for Claire, Well and Peter and very promising too. They loved Peter very much. His profession was a teacher/writer. Peter was a small person, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall with a quiet personality.
Tragedy struck this young man in his prime when Peter died on October 12, 1976, at the age of 34, in Cookham, England after being struck by an automobile while crossing a street at twilight on his way home from work. Peter’s body was cremated and returned to Oneco, Connecticut, where he is buried.
