OBITUARY OF DEWITT CLINTON WHITE

DeWitt Clinton White, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. White, was born aboard a ship on the Atlantic Ocean, in American waters, coming from Spain, November 10th 1822. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jennie Bateman, of Osage, MN, Wednesday afternoon, May 3, 1922. He was married in early life and to this union one child was born, the same being Mrs. Lettie Lee, of Wellsville, New York. The year 1845 he was again married to Miss Ellen Cunningham. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Ellen Crosby and Mrs. Jennie Bateman of Osage, Frank White of Park Rapids and DeWitt C. White of Boville, Idaho, the latter was ill at Spokane, WA at the time of his fathers death. Mr. White made his home with the two daughters at Osage, passing away at the home of Mrs. Bateman.

During his early life the deceased was employed for more than thirty years as a railway engineer, several years being spent with the C. B. and Q. Railway company in the east. In later years had made his residence in Minneapolis, having run out of that city. He also resided at Lamoure and Casselton, North Dakota, coming to Osage the year 1902, where he has since made his home.

Mr. White enjoyed his usual good health until eight days previous to his death, when he slipped an fell fracturing the bone in the limb just below the hip, which was the direct cause of his death, the shock proving too great to a man of his age.

He showed wonderful fortitude and patience through his suffering and was always cheerful and uncomplaining, being thoughtful of the comfort and happiness of others and though everything was done that could be done he passed away as above stated. Having lived a long and busy and useful life, he died as he had lived; honored, loved, and trusted. He reared his own monument in the of all who knew him while he lived, his life's work constituted deeds well done. Mr. White became a member of the Masonic order in the year 1840 and one of the possessions of which he was very proud was the Masonic apron, which had been in the family since the year 1720.

The funeral services were conducted from the Osage Baptist Church, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Masonic order of Park Rapids attending in a body. Rev. Harry W. Bell pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church in Park Rapids conducted the services. The Osage choir sang the selections "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Abide With Me". The popularity and esteem of the departed was evidenced by the multitude of which had gathered at the church, filling the same to capacity, as well as by the great display of floral offerings, among them being those from the Community Club of Osage, Order of Engineers and the Masonic order. Interment took place at Greenwood Cemetery at Park Rapids, the Masonic fraternity conducting their beautiful rites at the grave.
