Stationed at RAF Ayr (Heathfield), Scotland, F/O R. M. MacTavish died during flight formation training when 439 Squadron's Hawker Hurricane (#LD564) aircraft crashed into the forest close to Loch Doon, a freshwater lake near Dalmellington in East Ayrshire, Scotland.
