STD - Doctor of Sacred Theology.

The Rev. William George Walter Anthony, a descendant of Sir. Walter Raleigh, came to the United States from England when he was 16. He married Lotta Rowe Brown on September 6, 1904. The couple had no children.

Dr. Anthony received his religious education (BA, MA, and STD) at St. Stephen's (Bard) College in Annandale, NY, and served there also as a professor from 1904-1909. He was ordained a priest in 1896, and served at Vicar of St. Augustine's Chapel in New York City from 1909-1918; rector of St. Mary's Church in Wayne, Pennsylvania from 1918-1923, and assistant rector of St. James' Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1923-1938. He retired in 1938, but was called as Priest-in-Charge of St. James' Church in Hyde Park, NY in 1943 so that the current rector, the Rev. Frank R. Wilson, could enter the United States Navy. The Rev. Dr. Anthony officiated at the funeral and burial of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on April 15, 1945 in the Rose Garden of the president's Hyde Park estate. His words and actions have been preserved in many newsreels and biographies of President Roosevelt.

Dr. Anthony retired in 1946 when the Rev. Gordon L. Kidd became Rector of St. James' Church in Hyde Park. He lived with his wife and sister-in-law, Mrs. Florence Moore, in Rhinebeck, NY, where his occasionally assisted at services in the Church of the Messiah there. His funeral was held from that church when he died in February, 1953, with the Revs. Richard Cartmell and Gordon L. Kidd officiating.
