Obituary from Northfield News:

Russell Grisim, age 88, of Northfield, passed away Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, at Reflections Care Suites at Three Links Care Center. Russell Archie Grisim was the third of five children born to Russell and Jessie (Thompson) Grisim.

He was born Dec. 7, 1924, in rural Northfield at the family farm east of town. The family moved to Claremont, Minn., for a few years before returning to the Northfield area. As a young child, Russ moved to the farm just north of Waterford which eventually became the home where he raised his own family.

On March 25, 1944, he married Lorraine Nelson in Northfield at the parsonage of First United Church of Christ. To this union, seven children were born. Russ attended school at the one-room country school near his home.

He learned to farm at a young age and continued farming throughout his adult life and into his 80s. His passion for farming included crops and livestock, mainly dairy cattle and hogs.

Early in his career they used a horse-drawn plow, and as farming evolved he developed a love for Ford tractors. The way Russ saw it, if Ford does not make it, you do not need it. His pride for his farm was shown by his devotion.

He had a strong commitment to the township and community. Russ was a 25-year member of the Waterford Township Planning Commission and he was honored in 2011 for his many years of service. Russ loved to talk, and he could turn a brief chat into a 20-minute detailed conversation.

He was a very loving, caring man who passed this quality on to his family. This was especially evident as he cared for Lorraine throughout her long-term health issues. Lorraine passed away in December of 1996.

Russ loved to garden, play cards, tinker with tools and equipment and keep everything in order. He was a perfectionist. He loved to play with the grandkids and would stop whatever he was doing when they came to visit. It was also important to Russ to attend their activities whenever possible.

In 2004, Russ was blessed with Arlene Bultman, his companion and wonderful friend, and gained the love of her entire family.

In his later years, he had the opportunity to do more traveling. He enjoyed taking scenic bus trips around the state, as well as to destinations including New York, Nashville and Branson. He was convinced for the first and only time to step on a plane and travel to Florida.

Russ was a lifelong member of the First United Church of Christ. He was a strong believer in the church and guided his children with the Christian faith.

He is survived by his children, Wayne; Brenda and her husband Dennis Anderson; Glen and his wife Cindy; Elaine; Gayle and her husband Kevin Boesche; special companion, Arlene Bultman; brother, Kenneth Grisim; 14 grandchildren, Kimberly (Doug) Grubb, Kelly (Kevin) Erickson, Matthew Grisim, Nicholas Grisim; Shane (Vicki) Marvin; Dustin (Lynae) Anderson; Dana (Colby) Ackerman; Brooks Anderson; Jesse (Alice) Grisim, Chad (Jessica) Grisim; Michael Beaver, Jennifer (Zane) Borchers; Mark Beaver and Melanie Beaver; and 16 great-grandchildren; together with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine; two children in infancy, Linda and Patrick; sisters, Audrey Allen and Phyllis Clifford; brother, Robert Grisim; and son-in-law, Roy Beaver.

Thanks be to God for the life of Russell Grisim! Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct, 28, 2013, at First United Church of Christ in Northfield with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Bierman Funeral Home and at the church Monday prior to services. Funeral arrangements are by Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield.
