Mrs. Ruth Callahan Bryan, 93, of 2509 N. Mercer St., died in the Jameson Memorial Hospital on May 20, 1986, at 4:10 am after a brief illness.

She was born in Tiadaughton, Pa., on Feb. 3, 1983 [sic], to Andrew A. and Nellie Boatman Callahan.

She married attorney J. Elder Bryan in 1917. He preceded her in death in 1972.

Mrs. Bryan was a member of the First Alliance Church.

She was First Lady of New Castle in 1974. She taught Sunday school for many years at the Second United Presbyterian Church.

The Sarah Book Bible Class met in her home. She also taught daily vacation Bible school. She was a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She was on the board of the American Cancer Society. She was a volunteer for the American Heart Association and the Red Cross.

She was a volunteer at the information desk at St. Francis Hospital. Mrs. Bryan did volunteer work with the Girl Scouts. She held an office in the New Castle Needlework Guild which was organized during the depression in 1929 to sew layettes for needy babies.

Mrs. Bryan graduated from Wellsboro High School and Lock Haven State Normal (Teachers' College) where she majored in domestic science. In 1914 she was hired to teach at the New Castle YWCA.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jerome F. (Jane) Lynch of New Castle and Miss Ruth Anne Bryan at home; a son, Dr. J. Elder Bryan Jr. of Downey, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Perley (Lelia) Kennedy of Franklin, Pa., Mrs. Francis (Faye) Lawton of Wellsboro, Pa., and Mrs. Glenn (Betty) Thomas of Mont Alto, Pa.; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Louise; three brothers, Leonard, Stewart [Stuart], and William; and two sisters, Ina Smithgall and Theo Putman.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 pm today at R. Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road.

The body will lie in state from 10 am to the time of service at 11 am tomorrow at the First Alliance Church, Mission Meade Drive. The Rev. M.E. Nicholason, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.
