Jean was the daughter of Edward H. and Margaret S. Kerr. She attended Chicago Evangelistic Institute in 1940-41 and was a 1945 graduate of the E. G. Meyer School of Nursing in Buffalo, N.Y. She was a Methodist and a member of the American Nurses' Association. She married Henry 'Red' Smith on February 15, 1946.
