Martha Jean (Rich) Friend, 83, a resident of Barnes, passed away on Oct. 18, 2013 in Sacramento, Calif.

"Jean" was born on June 7, 1930 in Normal, Ill., the daughter of Everett and Daisy Rich. On Feb. 7, 1969, Jean married Thomas Friend in Glenview, Ill. They moved to Barnes in 1977. Jean worked as a doctor's assistant and also as a hostess for nine years at the Sand Point Supper Club. She was an avid bowler, enthusiastic golfer (although she said it wasn't her best sport) and eager bingo player. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Barnes and the American Legion Auxiliary in Skokie, Ill.

Jean is survived by one son, Gary (Matia) Clendenen of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; one daughter, Paulette Ferguson of Lakewood, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Sharon Friend of Evanston, Ill.; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Bill Clendenen; her second husband, Thomas Friend; and three daughters, Terri King, Pamela Miller and Cindy Clendenen.

Jean was cremated and a graveside service will be held at the Barnes Cemetery in Barnes at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14.
