Gilbert Harry Doane was born in Fairfield, VT and is a direct descendant of Deacon John Doane who settled in Plymouth, MA in 1630.

He worked for the local public library while attending Springfield High School where he graduated in 1914.

Graduated from Colgate University in 1918.

Served in the US Navy 1918-1920 working at the US Naval Training Station in Newport, RI with the Genealogy Society. He was in charge of The-House-That-Jack-Built library for enlisted men.

One year (1920-1921) at Columbia University's School of Library Services

University of Arizona 1921-1922 working as Assistant Librarian.

Graduate degree from University of Michigan in 1922-1925 while working as Assistant Librarian in charge of book classification,

Married Susan Howland Sherman on 23 June 1923 at Pomfret, CT. Together they gave birth to Cynthia Gilbert Doane and John Philip Doane

Director of Libraries and professor at University of Nebraska from 1925-1937 while getting another graduate degree.

Director of Libraries and Director of Library School for the University of Wisconsin from 1937-1956.

Ordained as an Episcopalian priest in 1956 and served as historiographer of the Diocese of Milwaukee from 1937-1967

Author of "Searching For Your Ancestors" in 1938. Also wrote "About Collecting Bookplates" and "The Legend of the Book"

Served in the US Army 1943-1945. Recruited for the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives (MFAA). Capt. Doane trained in VA and then served in England. After two years of recovery and restitution work, he retired a major. In Oct 2015 the Monuments Men of the MFAA were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

University Archivist for the University of Wisconsin from 1956-1962. Retired as Professor Emeritus

Editor of the "New England Historical & Genealogical Register" from 1960-1971.

They moved back to Susan's native Newport, RI after WI and lived there until Gilbert's stroke in 1978. He finished out his last few years in Newton, MA living with/being cared for by his daughter, grandchild, and great grandchildren.

Gilbert was inducted into the Wisconsin Library Hall of Fame in Nov 2014.
