Initially thought to have died from an accidental fall, investigation later determined Bernice was the victim of a murder-for-hire arranged by her daughter-in-law Narcisa "Narcy" Novack. Bernice's son Ben Novack, Jr., suffered the same fate. Narcy and her brother Cristobal Veliz were sentenced to life in Federal prison for the slayings.
