KERRVILLE - Mr. John Masters, 78, died while in his sleep on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his home in Kerrville. He was born Oct. 8, 1920, in Hobart, Okla., and had been a Kerrville resident for 35 years. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a staff sergeant. He married Lorraine Carriere on Feb. 28, 1942, in New Orleans. She preceded him in death on April 24, 1993. He was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, charter member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight in 1973. He received the Archbishop Furey Award for exceptional service to the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Survivors include four daughters, Carol M. Stoltz of Gladstone, Mo., Lisa M. Bishop of Edar Oberstein, Germany, Tina M. Greene of Carrizozo, N.M., and Mia Emery of Belton, Texas; son, Greg Masters of Kerrville; sister, Frankie Spry of Lavern, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. John and his gracious wife, Lorraine, enjoyed a life of world travel during their time with the military and embraced the church community with their loving service. His five children express their deep love and respect for this gentle man. A rosary will be recited on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999 at 6 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with the Rev. Michael Boulette officiating. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Boulette as celebrant. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
