CHETOPA MINER DIES IN MACHINE

Charles Mayfield Crushed to Death When He Falls In Coal Tipple.

Chetopa, Kan., March 9. — Charles William Mayfield, 51 years old, a resident of Chetopa thirty-two years, was killed instantly while working in a coal pit of the Chetopa Coal Mining Company about a mile west of here at noon yesterday.

Mayfield was killed when he became caught in the tipple, a conveyance to take the coal from the pit. His body was carried into machinery and crushed.

Born at Sheldon, Mo., in 1880, Mayfield came to Chetopa thirty-two years ago and for nine years he had been employed by the Chetopa Coal Mining Company.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Grace A. Mayfield, and three children, Willis, Fern and Harvon Mayfield, at home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

FUNERAL FOR CHETOPA MAN TO BE HELD TODAY

Chetopa, Kan., March 10. — Funeral services for Charles Mayfield, 51 years old, who was killed Tuesday morning when his body was crushed in machinery while working at a coal mine, west of here, will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Chetopa Methodist church. The Rev. Mr. Allerd of Monett, Mo., will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mayfield, with James A. Reed, president of the Chetopa Coal Company, and the latter's son, Matt Reed, had been repairing a belt used as a conveyor to carry coal out of a pit. In some manner his clothing became caught in the conveyor belt and he was carried into the machinery. His body was badly crushed.

Mayfield had resided here for thirty-two years.
