Janet passed away in Merced, CA on Monday, February 4, 2013 at the age of 90.

She was born Janet Louise Applegate on February 9, 1922 in Los Angeles to James and Oleida Applegate. Janet attended schools in the San Diego area and continued her education at San Diego State.

After World War II, Janet worked as a medical assistant in San Francisco. One summer weekend Janet and a girlfriend planned a trip to Yosemite. On their way her friend wanted to stop at Cross Lumber Co. to say hello to Dick Cross. Upon their arrival at the lumberyard, Dick was dashing out of the door responding to a call as a Merced volunteer fireman. Janet was smitten. Dick changed his plans for the weekend and arrived in Wawona where the girls were staying. He gave Janet her first tour of Yosemite Valley in his convertible.

Janet and Dick were married Dec. 8, 1951, making their first home in Wawona where they had a restaurant frequented by skiers on their way to Badger Pass. Janet and Dick relocated to Merced in 1952, but spent time in Wawona every year thereafter with their children and grandchildren. Janet was a kind and loving mother to their three daughters, and was involved in their local school PTA and extracurricular activities. Her life was filled with family and friends, gardening, reading, golf and travel.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Richard Cross, and grandson Rick George.

She leaves her daughters and sons-in-law, Katie and Phil Favier of Merced, Mary Ann and Jim Gibbs of Fresno, and Della and David Temple of Boulder, CO. She is also survived by her brother and sister- in- law Frank and Margaret Applegate of Spring Valley, CA and her brother James Applegate of La Mesa, CA. She leaves seven grandchildren, Ancelle Contreras and husband Raudel of Sacramento, Marin Favier of San Francisco, Jean-Philippe Favier of Merced, Alexandra Gibbs of San Francisco, Sam and wife Leigh Anna Gibbs of Fresno, Brynn and husband Mark Spencer of Cardiff, and Megan George of Fort Collins, CO. She also leaves two great grandsons, Caden and Cole Contreras of Sacramento.

The family would like to thank Amie Marchini and her staff at Park Merced and Mission Gardens for their excellent care of Janet the past few years. It has been much appreciated.

At Janet's request, there will be no services.

Any remembrances may be made to Hinds Hospice, 410 W. Main St., Merced, CA 95340 or the Merced County Historical Society, 21st & N St, Merced, CA 95340.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home.
