During the Civil War, Lyman served with the 5th and 9th Vermont Infantry.
Lyman's obituary, published in The Bethel Courier (Bethel, Vermont) on October 10, 1929 states he first enlisted in as a bugler in Company G, 5th Vermont Infantry, and soon after transfered "to the regular ranks". The obituary states he was wounded twice, and "... was engaged in several battles, among which were Chapin's Farm, For Harrison, Fair Oaks, Petersburg, Vicksburg, Richmond, Appomattox, Antietam and Spotsylvania."
