He was born May 13, 1902, in Grafton, N.D., to Jerry and Margarite (Boutang) Carpenter. He attended school in Mahnomen. He traveled the United States until 1935. He married Evelyn Johnson in 1937 in Bemidji. He lived in Bemidji and worked in construction. He enjoyed walking, dancing and socializing, playing cards and horses.
He is survived by three sons, Leo (Dora) Carpenter, Bemidji, Gerald Carpenter, Minneapolis, and Donald Carpenter, Bemidji; two daughters, Patricia Boe, Bemidji, and Linda (Paul) Reimer, Cass Lake; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; two brothers, Richard (Edna) Carpenter, Walla, Wash., and Paul (Eunice) Carpenter Moses Lake, Wash.; and a sister, Jeanette Connely, East Wenatchee, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Willie, Al, Eddie, John and Pat; two sisters, Rose Carpenter and Millie Birk; and a granddaughter. (Bemidji Pioneer Nov. 21, 2002)
