In the early 1970s, Ruth traded property she owned to the federal government in exchange for the Tompkins Inn and three acres of the land that it stood on, along with its outbuildings. The inn was on the old post road between Milledgeville and Athen and had sheltered and protected many travelers since 1812.
Ruth's mission was to restore the buildings to their original glory and to use it as the clubhouse for the local Garden Club. She deeded the property to them and also nominated it for the National Register of Historic Places.
It is currently in use as the Rock Eagle 4-H Center and offers conference facilities for the area.
