Wilhelm departed Bernhagen, Kreis Naugard, Pommern with his parents and siblings for Hamburg, Germany where they embarked on 30 August 1854 on the ship "Hammonia" for Hull, England. After arriving there they made their way to Liverpool, England where they embarked on the ship "Senator" for New York arriving there on 11 October 1854. Wilhelm married Johanna Augusta I. Dahlke in November 1861 in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
