Dan’s father George was a miner. The family would move several times as George would find work in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Dan would learn the trade of mining from his father. Dan also had a talent for farming and raising animals. Dan enlisted in the United States Army on the 11th of February 1941. He would serve his country for four and half years. He served in Australia as a medic. He was honorably discharged on the 23rd of September 1945. He returned to Wyoming after his discharge where his mother was living.
He would fall in love with a woman by the name of Marion Alice Warburton. They married on the 17th of June 1946. They had three daughters, Katharine, Marion, and Ruth. The small family would move to Texas, New Mexico, and Utah. Dan would ranch, farm, and mine to support the family. He loved to read and tell the girls stories. He was always singing or humming while he worked. Dan taught himself to play the Jew’s Harp and loved to play it for family and friends.
Dan and Marion would raise their daughters in the Latter Day Saints religion. They would serve a service mission in New Mexico. They believed in acceptance, unconditional love, and charity. They gave their time, talent, and love to everyone around them. Dan would care for Marion around the clock as she fought pancreatic cancer. He would be by her side until she passed away on the 30th of May 1990.
Dan would spend the remaining years of his life teaching his grandchildren how to garden, pan for gold, and finding adventures with them. Dan would suffer from debilitating strokes later in life. He would spend time living with each of his daughters. Grandpa Dan would always have a story to tell and a smile to give no matter how tired he was or how much pain he was in. He passed away at the Willowwood Care Center in Salt Lake City, Utah on the 13th of September 2007.
