A GOOD MOTHER GONE
They may not be so few or so little loving, but those good old-fashioned mothers are not plants found in every man's door yard, or, if so, are poorly appreciated. The tide of modern civilization sets in so swiftly that children too early lose sight of the all-loving fountain head. We write thus in general terms as fully applicable to one as another. It is not until the soulless clods are heard, in too many instances, that the wealth of a loving, suffering, ever-patient mother's love is driven into the heart of the careless and thoughtless. The subject of these remarks is the wife of Mr. Benj. Allen, with the exception of Mr. Wm. Maynard and Mr. J.C. Schermerhorn, the oldest continuous compositor on "The Nonpareil." The deceased was Mr. Allen's second wife and the mother of nine children - three by her first, and six by her last husband. She died after a lingering illness borne with Spartan fortitude. Arrabella (sic) McMurray was born Nov. 4, 1827, in Cumberland county, Pa., and emigrated to Illinois in 1844; to Iowa in 1847, and to Utah in 1854, where she was married to Benj. Allen May 24, 1855, and in 1862 returned to Iowa with her husband, and has resided in Council Bluffs since 1862. For the past twenty-four years Mrs. Allen has been an almost constant sufferer, the cause of which will be best understood after perusing the result of the post mortem examination held by Drs. Baker, Osborne, McKune and Macrae. The gentlemen state that the examination revealed the fact that the lungs had been long diseased, the left especially, and almost useless for respiration, and was so changed in structure that a very slight force might break it. This diseased condition had been caused mainly by a distortion of the spine, resulting from disease in early life, in consequence of which the stomach and other organs of the abdomen were forced unnaturally upward against the heart and lungs, impeding their healthful action, and causing disease. On Sunday Mrs. Allen ate a hearty meal, and, it not being properly digested, gases were formed forcing the stomach unusually against the diseased lung, in consequence of which a portion of it was torn and blood effused around the lungs, collapsing them and extinguishing life within a few moments.
"The Nonpareil" companions of the afflicted husband will act as pall-bearers and attend the funeral ceremonies at the late residence of the deceased at 2 o'clock this afternoon, where Rev J.G. Eckles will conduct the service, after which the body will be placed in Fairview cemetery. The following pall-bearers have been selected, being the oldest attaches of "The Nonpareil": Wm. Maynard, J.C. Schermerhorn, Spencer Smith, John W. Merrill, E.B. Gardiner, S.W. Moorehead, C. Abernethy, A.C. Keatley.
