Daughter of Alphonse and Marie Horbach, Elisa moved with her family from the Netherlands to Australia in 1952. There she met Joseph Franssen, another Dutch immigrant. They were married in 1958. They soon emigrated to Seattle, then settled in Bothell. In 1970 the family moved to Oak Harbor where they bought a small motel and transformed it into the Auld Holland Inn, a well-known establishment, complete with windmill, on the outskirts of town.

She was survived by her husband Joseph of Oak Harbor; her sons Peter Franssen of Oak Harbor, Carl Franssen of Anacortes and Michael Franssen of Oak Harbor; and her siblings, Jeff Horbach, Gerry Krans and Ria Wajon, all of Australia.
