Donald Joe Foster, 63, of Fancy Gap, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Foster is preceded in death by his parents; John Joe Foster and Eula Smallwood Foster.

Mr. Foster was a graduate of Overton High School in Memphis, Tenn. After high school he completed 2 years at Memphis State. Mr. Foster served in Vietnam and retired as a tech sergeant after 21 years in the Air Force Reserve. Mr. Foster was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 45 years. He was the recipient of many service awards during this time which included the Silver Beaver Award and the Silver Antelope Award. The Wood Badge course was dear to his heart during his service, and he served on many courses concluding as Scout Master and receiving his fourth bead.

After 30 years of service and retiring from Conwood Company, Mr. Foster purchased the Inn in Orchard Gap, Fancy Gap which he operated along with his wife Sherry until his time of death. Mr. Foster was instrumental along with others in the Fancy Gap area in forming, Blue Ridge Host, to promote tourism in the Fancy Gap area. He was also involved in the restoration of the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter home, a member of the Fancy Gap United Methodist Church where he served as a lay speaker, and the Cabell Lodge 328 where he was a Master Mason.

Survivors include his wife Sherry S. Foster of the home and his son; Jamey of Fancy Gap, Mother-in-law; Dorothy H. Staples of Fancy Gap, Brother-in-law; Geoffrey F. Staples and wife Lori, Niece; Ellie and Nephew; Matthew all of Newport News, and many extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Fancy Gap United Methodist Church with Pastor Maria Grimm Officiating.

The burial will follow in the Morris Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 6 – 8 P.M. at the funeral home. A guestbook is available online by visiting www.vaughanguynnandmcgrady.com.
