Death Takes Aged Citizen
Maurice Moriarity Was Our Oldest Native Son
Belle Plaine lost one of its oldest citizens Saturday in the death of Maurice D. Moriarity, who passed away at the home of his son Maurice Ed Moriarity in Belle Plaine. He had been in failing health for about a year but mentally was alert up to the day he died. He would have been 94 years old next December 3.
All that long span of life was spent in the Belle Plaine community. Born December 3, 1864, he was the eldest of six sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Moriarity, pioneer settlers in Belle Plaine township.
In 1900 he married Anna Weldon, who preceded him in death, November 2, 1926 (sic 1921). After the death of his wife he retired from the farm, lived with his children, and mostly with his son Maurice Ed and family.
He was one of the charter members of the Belle Plaine Council K. of C., was always a great reader and loved to discuss national and world affairs.
Surviving him are his two sons and two daughters, namely, Maurice Ed of Belle Plaine, and Tom, St. Paul; Grace (Mrs. Ray O'Neill) and Mary (Mrs. Hugo Hein) of St. Paul. There are twenty grandchildren.
He also leaves two brothers; John, Belle Plaine and Joseph J. of Shakopee, and two sisters, Nellie and Martha Moriarity, Minneapolis.
Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at Sacred Heart church, Father O'Connor officiating, with burial in the parish cemetery.
