A. M.”Slim” Gabrel, 84, a long time resident of Odessa passed away Monday, October 10, 2005 at his residence. He was born May 5, 1921 in Haskell County to Alfred Calvery and Lela Henry Gabrel. He married Lorena May Savage November 26, 1941 in Pampa, TX.
He served with the 26th Platoon in the U.S. Marine Corp. during WWII. He was the Sheriff of Ector County from 1957 to 1972, he was the first sheriff to be elected for a four year term in Ector County. He was the past president in 1968 & 1969 and lifetime member of the Sheriff’s Association of Texas. He was a lifetime member of the Ector County Sheriff’s Posse. A career which included over 30 years of service with various law enforcement agencies in Texas, including the Odessa Police Department, The Ector County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, License and Weight Division.
He was the past owner of Gabrel’s Surplus and present owner of S.L.S. Co. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Margie Louise Hogan, and Winona Fincher.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lorena Gabrel of Odessa, son, W.O. Shafer Gabrel and wife Delyn of Katy, TX. brothers, C.H. (Pug) Gabrel of Woodward, OK. Burl Dean Gabrel of Alamogordo, NM. sisters, Ina Mae Johns of Odessa, and Ima Jean Fuller of Alamogordo, NM. (2) grandchildren, Karson Shafer Gabrel and Karli Kay Gabrel both of Katy and dozens of very special nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2005 at the First United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Terry Pugh officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to Home Hospice of Odessa or the Blepherospasm Research Foundation at P.O. Box 12468, Beaumont, TX. 77726 (this is a neurological disorder which his daughter-in-law Delyn is affected.)
Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Parekh, Eric Parekh, Walt Greeman, Sr., Walt Greeman, Jr., Mike French, Don Reeves, Marlin Reeves, and Mark Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will include Will Wadell, Jack Brown, Troy Chaffin, Robert Chapa, Earl Kyzer, Jack Tidwell, Lynn Beal, Judge Bill McCoy, Judge Tyron Lewis, and 1957 to 1972 all deputys and staff of the Ector County Sheriff’s Department who Slim referred to as the finest group of men and women in law enforcement.
