Richard Albert Scarbrough, age 94, of Fredericktown and formerly of Mount Vernon, died after a courageous fight with Alzheimers on Saturday morning at the Emeritus of Hillenvale Living Center, where he had been living.

Richard was born in Mount Vernon on April 17, 1919 to the late Albert Newton (Burt) and Celia Grace (Inks) Scarbrough. He lived in Fredericktown his entire life, graduating from Fredericktown High School in 1937. He began his working career at Scarbrough hardware with his father. Their motto was: "99 to 1 we have it!" He owned and managed the store after his father's death. Richard married on February 6, 1957 to Helen Juanita Wise, his surviving soul-mate, living in the same home he grew up in. After 65 years of enjoying, helping his friends and everyone that came through the doors of his store, Richard retired.

Richard was a veteran of the US Army serving as a Paymaster, surviving the harrowing attack of Pearl Harbor. He was a Mason and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a trustee and treasurer. Richard was a member of Thrall Lodge #170, Anhill Chapter #81, Fellowcraft Club, Scottish Rite and the American Legion. He was honored when he reigned as Marshal of the 28th Annual Fredericktown Tomato Show parade.

Richard and his wife, Helen, wintered in Florida for the last 27 years at Horseshoe Cove R.V. park in Bradenton. He enjoyed square dancing, golf, shuffleboard and playing cards. After retiring he enjoyed traveling to the Panama Canal, Europe and many of the 50 States, especially Alaska and Hawaii with his best friend; his wife Helen.

Richard is survived by his wife Helen (Wise) Scarbrough; a niece, (omitted) of Mansfield; two nephews, (omitted) of Geraldine, Montana and (omitted) of Fredericktown; great-nephews and great-nieces; a cousin, (omitted) of Findlay.

Besides his parents, Richard is preceded in death by nephew John Christopher Reed; two cousins, Chester and Clarence.

Loved ones and friends may call from 11:00 to 1:00pm on Thursday October 31, 2013 at the Snyder Funeral Home, 33 East College St. in Fredericktown, Ohio, where a Masonic Service will take place followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00pm with Pastor Michael Smith officiating. A committal service will follow in Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown where a Military Service will take place by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
