Nobel Prize Laureate Scientist. He received his doctorate in chemistry at the University of Munich in 1894 where he studied under Adolf von Baeyer, who had received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1905. His doctoral thesis was on the structure of cocaine. His studies concentrated on plant and animal pigments and in 1912 at the University of Berlin he showed that chlorophyll was a mixture of two compounds, "Chlorophyll A" and "Chlorophyll B." This discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In 1924, due to antisemitism, he retired. A list of honors and awards he received, posted in "Nobel Lectures, Chemistry 1901-1921," is over three pages long.
