He graduated from Concordia High School and Concordia Junior College in Austin, TX followed by Concordia College in Seward, NE and Concordia Theological Seminary, in Ft. Wayne, IN.
In 1972, he married Melissa Stovall. In 1982, he was Ordained a minister in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. During 25 years of Ministry, he served parishes at St. Peter's, in Apache, OK, Immanuel, in Lima, OH and Good Shepherd, in Duncan, OK. He retired in 2006 and moved to Corpus Christi, TX, where he continued as a supply preacher for many years.
He enjoyed gardening and at one time had 56 rose bushes in the yard. He also was a prolific carpenter building many pieces of furniture, some he kept and many he sold. But his greatest joys were Preaching Christ crucified to his flock, teaching the Bible, administering the Sacraments and Baptizing the lost.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Melissa Stovall Childs; 4 children, John (Carol) Childs of Portland, OR, James (Sarah) Childs of Indianapolis, IN, Peter (Donna) Childs, Lima, OH and Elizabeth (TK) Revis of Corpus Christi, TX; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Childs, Nicholas Childs and Mya Childs; siblings, Carol Childs Smith, Herbert Childs and Cathy (Bill) Evans; an uncle, John Holterman; a cousin, Kathleen Holterman Cull; a sister-in-law, Karen (John) Noles; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stillborn twin sons, Abe and Ben; an infant sister and a sister-in-law, Judy Childs.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 27, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Maxwell P. Dunne Chapel. Funeral services will be on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church with Rev. Kevin Jennings as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park with James Childs, Peter Childs, TK Revis, John Noles, Bill Evans and Timothy Revis serving as pallbearers.
