Services Set Monday For Mullen Student

Funeral services for a 15-year-old Mullen High School student, who collapsed during football drill at the school and later died, have been set for Monday.

Ed Balkenbush, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar L. Balkenbush of 2768 S. Depew St., died in Mercy Hospital Thursday evening of what doctors termed a massive brain hemorrhage.

The boy had run two 20-yard "wind sprints" during a toughening-up session Thursday on the Mullen practice field when he suddenly became nauseated. Moments later he collapsed and was rushed to Mercy Hospital.

He was given the last rites and died later in the evening without regaining consciousness. Doctors at the hospital told a spokesman of the school the hemorrhage was caused by an "aneurysm," or weak patch in a blood vessel in the brain, which burst. The conditionis congenital, the doctors said.

Balkenbush was a sophomore at the school and a candidate for a defensive backfield position on the squad. Practice Thursday consisted of physical conditioning drills and several "skull sessions," and there was no bodily contact, a spokesman for the school said.

The boy was also a member of the school wrestling team and coaches described him as an enthusiastic competitor and a good student.

Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Notre Dame Church. Requiem high mass will be sung at 9 a.m. Monday in the church and burial will be in Mt. Olivet.

Classmates will act as pallbearers.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are three brothers, Steven, Vincent and Robert, and a sister, Kathleen; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael P. McDonough, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Louis Balkenbush, all of Denver.
