Max Miller, the Cheeky Chappie, Britain's top comedian in the 1930s, '40s and '50s excelled as a stand-up comic topping the bill at all the large variety theatres where his skill was such that he could hold an audience in the palm of his hand. In addition, he appeared and starred in feature films, wrote and sang his own songs. To honour him, the Max Miller Appreciation Society was founded in 1999.
