Soviet Military Commander. He began his career as student of shipbuilding in Petrograd before transferring to the Konstantinovskye Artillery School where he graduated as a second lieutenant. He joined the Red Army after serving in the Russian Civil War as a commander of an artillery battalion. During the 1920's he received additional training from the Frunze Military Academy. Following graduation he served as commander of an artillery unit in the Kiev Military District and as an instructor in military tactics at the Dzerzhinsky Artillery Academy. During the Russian-Finnish War he was appointed to the Russian 7th Army rising to the rank of division commander and deputy inspector-general of artillery. Following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 he served on the Western Front as director of artillery. He was a major participant in the defense of Moscow and Leningrad commanding the 5th and 7th Russian Armies. In January 1943 he directed a Soviet counter offensive successfully breaking the German blockade on the City of Leningrad. In June 1944 he was promoted to the rank of "Marshal of the Soviet Union" for his role in successfully liberating Leningrad and planning the successful invasion of Finland. The following year he was promoted to the rank of "Hero of the Soviet Union." Following the war he served in several high ranking commands including commander of the countries national air defense forces and deputy minister of defense. He was a five time recipient of the "Order of Lenin," a three time recipient of the "Order of the Red Banner," a recipient of the Gold and Red Star and a recipient of the "Victory" medal.
