He was born March 13, 1927, in Woodstock, the son of Irvin and Grace F. (Wyatt) Aavang Sr. On June 27, 1948, he married Joy Hallam in Woodstock.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 5040 in Woodstock and the post honor guard for many years. He also was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock Moose Lodge 1329, the China Marines and the First Marine Division Association. He retired in 1983 after 37 years with Illinois Bell Telephone, and was a member of the Illinois Bell Pioneers. He had been the Grand Marshall of the 1994 Memorial Day Parade.
Survivors include his wife of Woodstock; a daughter, Barbara (Roger) Oberman of Woodstock; two sons, Steven (Linda) Aavang of Woodstock and Wayne (Rhonda) Aavang of Gastonia, NC; 10 grandchildren, JoyAnn and Kayla Oberman, Courtney, LynnAnn and Grace Aavang, Michele (James) Ahrens, Catherine and Robert Aavang and Stewart and Erin Hooper.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolyn.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Grace Lutheran Church, the Rev. John V. Clark-Johnson officiating.
Burial will be in McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodstock.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois or Grace Lutheran Church Parish Nurse Fund.
