Howard J. (Boilerhead) Smith, 66, of 7601 Lackman Road, Lenexa, died Thursday at Shawnee-Mission Medical Center. He was born Oct. 31, 1918, in Fort Scott, and had lived in the Kansas City area since 1940.

He had been an engineer for the Frisco and Burlington Northern Railroads, and had retired in 1982 after 45 years service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenwood in Shawnee. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Young Man's Democratic Club of Johnson County, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Scottish Rite in Kansas City, Kansas, the VFW in Fort Scott, the Peter Smith American Legion post in Shawnee and Shawnee Masonic Lodge.

He leaves his wife, Sarah L. Smith, of the home; three sons, James H. Smith of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, Stephen P. Smith of Merriam, and Craig K. Smith of Kansas City Kansas; three daughters, Dana Gruber of Louisville, Ky., Gina Hall, Wichita, and Sarah Coleman of Metarie, La.; one brother: Homer Potter of Fort Scott; four sisters, Mable Frye of
Pierre, S.D., Margaret Weatherbie, Miami, Okia., Elizabeth Shannon of Tulsa and Shirley Mitzner of Shawnee and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Amos Family Chapel in Shawnee. Burial will be in National Cemetery in Fort Scott. Masonic services will be held following the funeral. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Amos Chapel. The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church of Greenwood.

Howard J. (Boilerhead) Smith, 67, a former Fort Scott resident, died Thursday at his home in Lenexa, Kan., of an apparent heart attack. Funeral services are pending.

Pallbearers for the funeral of Howard J. Smith were Gary Frye, H.I. Kirk, Matt Bates, Eric Bates, Doug Potter, Gene Austin, Charles Smith and Mark Mitzner.
