U.S. Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was studying law when he enlisted in the Union Army. He served in various Army units such as Commissary Sergeant of the 130rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry and was Lieutenant Assistant Quartermaster of the 149th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, when he mustered out in September 1865. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in March 1866 and commenced to practice law in Rockville, Indiana. He was prosecuting attorney of Parke County, (1866-68), a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, in 1868 and served in the Indiana State Senate, (1874-78). In 1885, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving until 1889. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was the Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Indiana, in 1893.
