He was born August 29, 1931 in Hixson, TN; James was the 2nd of five children to Albert G. Penney & Delphia McGuire Penney.
James is a 1949 graduate of Hixson High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired as a Design Engineer after 30 years service from Combustion Engineering Company.
He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and also had a love for Indian artifacts. He loved geology and was the former President of the Tennessee Valley Rock and Mineral Club. James had a love for life. He was a strong Christian who loved spending time with his family and friends.
Mr. Penney is preceded in death by his, parents, Albert and Delphia Penney; daughter,Rhonda Gaye Penney, and brother, Evan Penney.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shelby Hoback Penney; brothers, Grady(Charlotte) Penney, Calvin (Brenda) Penney; sister, Velma Penney Walker; daughter, Sandy Penney; two sons, Steve (Missy) Penney, and David ( Carmen) Penney; grandchildren, Brandon Karnes, Kristin (Matt) Wolcott, Erin Karnes, Lauren Penney, Myles Penney,Jackson Penney, Coleson Penney; great grandchildren, Noah Wolcott, Khloe and Kaylee Wolcott, Maya Bible, Ryan Karnes and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2012 in the funeral home chapel with Ministers, Ray Wooten and Eric Evans officiating.
Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Military honors. Those serving as pallbearers are Dale Penney,Grant Blaylock, Keith Butler, Fred Pratt, Darren Moyer, Tom Marshall; Honorary pallbearers; Frank Penney and Rufus King.
The family will receive friends for visitation Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 4:00 – 8:00p.m. and on Sunday, August 5, 2012 from noon until the time of the service.
