John P. Dietz, 81, former Richland County Sheriff and Wahpeton businessman, died unexpectedly Monday morning at his home. He was born Aug. 16, 1884, at Chilton, Wisconsin. He was married to Helen Entringer of St. Cloud, Wisconsin February 11, 1908. The couple came to Wahpeton in 1913 when he had farmed and operated a meat market. He had served as sheriff of Richland County from 1938 to 1942. Mrs. Dietz died July 27, 1965. He also farmed in Dwight Township and retired to Wahpeton in 1950. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Saint John's Catholic Church.

Survivors are four daughters and two sons; Loretta Achter, Lucille Ausloos, Hilda Ramos, Magdalen O'Donnell, John and James Dietz; 16 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, three sisters and three brothers.
