He was a born again believer and a member of Persia Baptist Church for 58 years, where he served as deacon for 54 years. Mr. Newton was an area farmer and worked several years as a salesman and mechanic at Romoco Farm Store. He worked for the State Department of Transportation and served as County Road Superintendent from 1976 until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Newton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. The loves of his life were his Heavenly Father, family, friends, politics and good food. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Newton; mother, Nola (Sam) King Newton; step-mother, Hatti Parker Newton; sister-in-law, Morna Kirkpatrick Brown; grandfather, Hiram King; grandson, Sammy James Seay.
Mr. Newton is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline Kirkpatrick Newton of the home; daughter, Vicki Seay and husband, Sammy; sons, Gary Newton and wife, Shirley, Paul Newton and wife, Sharon, Charlie Newton and wife, Betsy all of Rogersville; Jeanne Lawson (mother of Megan and Hunter) and husband, Roger Lawson; grandchildren, Roseanna Newton Self and husband, J.R., Megan Rimer and husband, Chris, Hiram Newton, Emily Newton and fiance`, Josh Reese, Hugh Newton, Hunter Newton and fiance`, Brittini Cobb; great-grandchildren, Kathleen Self, Kristen Seay, Morgan Stewart and Carter Stewart; sisters-in-law, Maggie Fletcher of Rogersville, Georgia Huntworth of Greenfield, IN; several nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Kathy Johnson and Edith Smith Douthat; beloved pets, Bear and Polar Bear.

Funeral service will be conducted 3:30 P.M., Sunday, January 18, 2009 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Rip Noble and Dr. John McPheron officiating. There will be no formal graveside service. The interment will be in Persia Baptist Church Cemetery.
