Robert R. Monte of 4505 Tenella Road, died July 30 at Craven Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was the son of the late Thomas and Louise Monte, born in Westchester County New York, on September 26, 1921. He was educated at New York Friend's School and the University of Delaware. He served as a Captain in World War II in the South Pacific as a member of an amphibian unit of the Army Corps of Engineers.
He came to New Bern in 1952 and founded Craven Rendering Company and later co-founded Monte Printing Company. He designed and printed scaled folding models of historic sites including Independence Hall, Tryon Palace, Mount Vernon,etc., and models under contract for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He was an active member of the Eastern Carolina Yacht Club and served two terms as commodore. He was predeceased by his sister ,May McLaughlin.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Otto Monte; a son, Peter T. Monte and his wife Firth B. Monte of New Bern; and a daughter, Louise Monte Williams and her husband David S. Williams of Orlando FL. He is also survived by six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, August 2 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Shirley Rogers officiating. Internment will follow in the Memorial Garden of the church. The family will receive friends at the home and following the service at the Session House of the First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the memorial fund of the First Presbyterian Church, New Bern or a charity of your choice.
