It was suggested that Franklin's first name was Frankline, that he was born in 1841 and gave the wrong birth date when he listed, and that he was born in Sunapee, NH. Other researchers state he was born in Goshen, New Hampshire.

Franklin enlisted and mustered in as a Private in Company G of the 11th Vermont Infantry (also known as the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery) on December 7, 1863. He transferred to Company C on June 24, 1865, and mustered out August 25, 1865.

Some *transcripts* of Vermont death records suggest Frank died in Strafford; no Vermont Death Certificate was found to confirm that place of death. In "The History of Stratton, Vermont" (D.K. Young, Town of Stratton, Vermont, 2001), the author lists Frank Symmister as one of those interred in Row 12 of Ball Cemetery, and notes that the gravesite was then marked only with a veteran's flag. The author also notes Frank's birth in February, 1835, and his death date as December 5, 1915.
