CALPO, Catalina Misa 'Mom'

Passed away peacefully at age 98 in her home on October 19, 2013, surrounded by her extended loving family & friends. She was determined to be there for everyone to the end. Catalina was born April 30, 1915, in Corregidor, Philippine Islands, to Alejandro Misa & Maria Aguilar. The eldest of four, she was followed by sister Lucing, brother Rudolfo, and sister Pilar. She grew up to become a school teacher, her exceptional teaching skills, language ability, and dedication to education something that everyone who ever heard her speak enjoyed. Her sense of humor as well kept everyone laughing.

She met Mauricio 'Pop' Calpo, a Philippine Army Scout (later recruited to become an officer in the U.S Army), and they were married on March 1, 1941. Four children followed: Linda, Aida, Rudy and Mike.

After Mauricio's service during the WWII, the family was stationed at Kadena U.S. Army Base in Okinawa and then Ft. Lewis, Washington, where Mauricio retired from the military. The family moved back to the Philippines in 1954, settling in Quezon City where several of the children's cousins lived with them at the big bungalow-style house on Mayon Street. The immediate family eventually settled in Sacramento in 1958, where friends had already moved to, and Mauricio went to work at McClellan Air Force Base. Catalina and Mauricio wanted their children to have the best opportunities for education in the United States.

The house where Catalina lived independently to her last day was the house the family bought on the American River in 1965 where they could live with their love of fishing and gardening. Many generations of aunties, uncles, cousins, friends, and family gathered at this house over the years, filling it with joy, humor, and good cooking to share. Five granddaughters came along, followed by six great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Though Catalina lost her true love and soul mate Mauricio in 2000, she carried on for the family, crocheting afghans for everyone, cooking everyone's favorites, always asking about what was going on in the lives of each person and remembering it all.

Catalina is survived by her children Linda Zeitlin (& Barry), Aida Calpo, Rudy Calpo (& Janice), Mike Calpo (& Toni), grandchildren Deborah Glick (& Jon), Elizabeth Swithenbank (& Zach), Jenelle Reali (& Greg), Jennine Calpo (& Marc), and Mariah Calpo; and great-grandchildren Austin & Evan, Connor & Chase, and Christopher, Noah, & Olivia.

She was preceded in death by her dear husband Mauricio, and her sisters and brother. Numerous additional family and friends remember and miss her.

A Rosary will be held on Wed. October 23 at 6p.m. at Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home, 5401 Folsom Blvd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thur. October 24 at 1p.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 3235 Arden Way. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery.
