A native of Scott County, Va., she was the oldest of five children born to the late Loda and Alverda Franklin Kendrick.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, A.B. Evans, in 2001; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill and Wanda Kendrick, and Tom and Emogene Kendrick; and one sister and brother-in-law: Evelyn and Earl Jessee.
She graduated from Midway High School in 1940, where she played basketball all four years.
After high school, she went to work for the Kingsport Telephone Company as a switchboard operator for four years.
She then married and moved to Greene County with her husband.
Mrs. Evans loved working in her flowers, as well as gardening. She also enjoyed crocheting and quilting. Her home was always open for anyone who came to visit and for anyone who wanted a good meal.
She was well-known among her husband's many hunting and fishing friends as the "best wild game cook" in Greene County.
She is survived by her daughter and "son"-in-law: Lynda and Roy Tucker of Gray, with whom she had resided the last two years. She is also survived by her two precious granddaughters and their husbands: Amy and Shane Darling of Elizabethton, and Anna and Alvin Murphy of Erwin; six great-grandchildren: Dustin, Evan, Caitlin, and Preston Darling, and Gracie and Will Murphy; one brother and sister-in-law,: Roy and Galola Kendrick of Gray; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services, Johnson City, with Roy Tucker officiating.
Music will be provided by singers from Big Creek Free Will Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6-8 p.m. prior to the service.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at GreeneLawn Memory Gardens in Greeneville, with pastors Garry Eads and Tommy Griffin officiating.
Active pallbearers will be Shane Darling, Alvin Murphy, Dustin Darling, Evan Darling, Brad Jackson and Wade Tipton.
