Mary ElizabethThere is a fair amount of incorrect information about John floating around on the internet, which people have been copying and pasting for years. Let's try to set the record straight based on actual primary, original sources, of which there are many and which people often ignore:

John's parents were Michael Hewlett and his wife Experience MacKay. Exeprience was FROM Newton, her last name was NOT NEWTON. Michael and Experience had two children with birth records in Newton - Josiah and Daniel. Michael and Experience appear to have moved to Connecticut shortly after Daniel's birth.

There are two baptismal records for children of Michael in Putnam, Connecticut - one for Daniel (same child as above) and another for John. John's baptismal record looks like this:
Howlett, John, s. Michale, bp. September 16, 1716, by Rev. J. Fisk

Since John's brother Daniel was born in 1709 and not baptized until many years later, it shouldn't be assumed that John's baptismal record is an infant christening record, but a baptismal record generated when his family joined Reverend Fisk's congregation.

We don't know exactly when or where John was born, but John was baptized 16 September, 1716 in Putnam, Connecticut. (Actually, Putnam was not incorporated until 1855 from sections of Killingly, Pomfret, and Thompson. The family was likely living in Killingly, but in the part of Killingly which eventually became Putnam). I have seen on the internet a birthdate for john of 8 September 1716, which is a guess someone made at some point based on when he was baptized, but it is just that - only a guess.

John married Sarah in 1746. Their marriage record says the marriage was recorded in Killingly, but that the bride was from Ashford.

John and Sarah had 8 children born in Killingly, each with their own birth record:
1. Mary, 14 December 1747
2. Sarah, 16 Jan 1749
3. John, 16 Jan 1749 (twins)
4. Experience, 12 Feb 1754
5. John, 20 Mar 1756
6. Silvanus, 7 Nov 1758
7. Samuel, 10 Mar 1761
8. Asa, 20 Feb 1763
There are indexed versions of these records on ancestry.com, but familysearch also has the original, handwritten records of Killingly.

In addition to the town records, the Thompson, Connecticut church records show the children of John Hulet are:
Mary bp. 20 Dec. 1747 Vol. B&M pg. 21
Experience bp. 17 Feb. 1754 Vol. B&M pg. 21
John bp. 28 Mar. 1756 Vol. B&M pg. 21
Sylvanus bp. 10 Dec. 1758 Vol. B&M pg. 22
Samuel bp. 15 Mar. 1761 Vol. B&M pg. 22
Asa bp. 1 May 1763 Vol. B&M page 22
Baptismal church records include everyone but the twins John and Sarah. I think both these children died young, and were probably sickly from the start. Sometimes children who they didn't think would live very long were given emergency baptisms that didn't make it into the regular books.

An abstract of these church records can be found on ancestry.com. See https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/3032/41107_620303988_0406-00002?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=41107_620303988_0406-00029

Sarah had her last child Asa when she was 40. There is no indication of any additional children.

John appears to have started a move about 1761 from Connecticut to Tyringham, Berkshire, Massachusetts. There are many land records in Berkshire which support this. There is a land deed, specifically a sale by John Hulet "late of Killingly now about to settle in Township Number One adjoining Sheffield in the County of Hampshire," yeoman, for 13 pounds to Nathaniel Ormsby of lot 50, which was originally owned by William Whitney, containing 50 acres, dated 9 July 1761. But the move seem to have taken a long time; it is not until 1773 that we have a land document where John actually identifies himself as "of Tyringham, Berkshire County."

In 1784 John executed a mortgage of his property and identified himself as from "Mount Washington, Berkshire County." This is the last land deed with his name on it that I can find.

The first proprietor's book of Mount Washington was destroyed when the house of a past town clerk burned during the mid 1800's. The first recorded meeting in the second proprietor's book was dated November 5, 1778 and was held at the house of Stephen Bump. Lieut John Dibble was chosen as moderator and John Hulett as proprietor's clerk. At this meeting it was voted to call the town Mount Washington. This appears to be John's residence when he died. (See this website: http://genealogy.stellarwinds.org/mtwashistory/Revolutionary%20War%20Mt%20Washington.htm)

In the 1790 census of Lee, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, this John's sons - John Hulet, Sylvanus Hulet, and Samuel Hulet - are living there (Asa was in nearby Great Barrington). The 1800 census of Lee lists sons Samuel Hulett, John Hulett, Asa Hulett, and Sylvanus Hulett.

I can't find John in the 1790 or 1800 census anywhere, which makes me suspicious that he actually died before 1790. By 1790 he would have already been 74 years old. John is not mentioned in his sister's will dated 1797, and she calls her brother Oliver her "second brother" - another good indication that John died before 1790.

He has no known headstone anywhere. It is possible that he is buried in Mount Washington, but there is no proof. He ALMOST CERTAINLY wasn't buried clear back in Killingly, as that would be some distance to take a dead body in those days, and his ENTIRE FAMILY had already moved to Massachusetts. I have also seen an estimated death year for John of 1805. This is ALMOST CERTAINLY FALSE. Someone couldn't find him in the 1810 census and estimated that he died someone halfway between the 1800 and the 1810 census. However, it was his son John who appeared in the 1790 census, not this John. And the fact that he his not mentioned in his sister's will all point to a pre-1790 death.
