Retired Col. Harold A. Veazey, 79, an intelligence officer who served in the Army from 1941 to 1960 and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, died of cardiac arrest Jan. 7 at his daughter's home in College Park, Ga. He had leukemia.
Col. Veazey had been a member of the Reserve Officers Association since 1928 and was a past president of its Washington department. He was assistant secretary general of the U.S. delegation to the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers.
He was born in Denver, Colo., and reared in Bisbee, Ariz. He was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. He had lived in Washington since 1960.
He received his commission in the Army Reserves in 1927. From 1927 until 1941, he was a newsman with the Hearst newspapers in Los Angeles and an accountant in San Francisco.
During World War II, Col. Veazey served in Europe. The majority of his Army service was in the intelligence field and he had been commandant of an Army intelligence school in West Germany, head of the intelligence section at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and head of the counter-intelligence of the Third Army at Fort MacPherson, Ga. His last tour of duty was with Army Intelligence in Staten Island, N.Y. He retired in 1960.
In addition to his daughter, Dot Haney, of College Park, survivors include his wife, Eunice, of Washington; a sister, Lucille Veazey, of Tucson, Ariz., and five grandchildren.
