Obituary: Sally Nerren Phillips
March 18, 1944 - April 21, 2008
Sally Nerren Phillips, 64, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at her home. A loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, sweet sister, and faithful friend, Sally lived a remarkable life and will be sadly missed by the many who loved her.
A member of First Baptist Church, Sally was active in the Manna Ministry and Women's Bible Studies. Sally was an outstanding athlete, excelling in basketball, bowling, and golf. She was the first Bradley Bearette to have her jersey retired, number 14. Earlier this year she was inducted into the Bradley Central High School Basketball Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Bradley County ?Ole Timers? Hall of Fame in 2006. Some of her numerous basketball honors include all-district 1960, 1961, 1962; all-region 1960, 1961, 1962; all-state 1960, 1962; Nashville Business College United States Champions 1963, 1964; United States Honorable Mention All American 1963, 1964; and Gold Medal Winner 1963 Pan American Games at Sao Paulo, Brazil. Sally was also an avid golfer and won the Cleveland Country Club Invitational in 1985. One of the earliest employees of Cleveland State Community College, Sally Phillips worked as a secretary and later as an instructor in foreign language and vocabulary. She worked at CSCC from 1967 until 2000. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, George Nolen and Elizabeth Nerren and her beloved husband Forrest Phillips, Jr. She is survived by two children: Kimberly Shealy of Cleveland and Forrest James (Jamie) Phillips and his wife Amy of Knoxville; four granddaughters: Taylor Harris Lanclos and her husband Danny Lanclos, Hailey, Michelle, and Natalie Shealy; and one great-granddaughter Abbigail Lanclos, all of Cleveland; siblings: George and Suzanne Nerren, Deborah and Bill Holland, Danny and Debbie Nerren, all of Cleveland, and Alicia and Frederick Sharp of Texas; step mother, Loetta Nerren of Texas; sister-in-law, Doris Jean Bolton of Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008 in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Griffith and Reverend Jim Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Manna Ministry at First Baptist Church of Cleveland.
