Eldest son of LTC Michael Momcilovich, Sr. and Helen Jane Balicke, Michael was born in Wilmington, Delaware. An army brat, he spent his youth in various military stations, including Japan.

Mike joined the Class of 1965 at the United States Military Academy. His photo in the Howitzer for the class of 1965 was accompanied by the following narrative:

Mike
This Army brat will carry on the Army way that his father showed him. The future will hold many new experiences and fond memories as Mike returns to posts he saw when he was younger. Strength and drive will bring an exciting career to this man. Mike's winning smile will serve him in good stead through the years.

Assigned to Germany after his graduation, he made routine border patrols along the inner-German border. Mike loved to fly and this love continued as he redeployed from Germany to South Vietnam, arriving there on September 27, 1967. In the Spring of 1968, he was selected to transition to the highly upgraded combat fighter helicopter (AH-1G.0). While on a routine mission, his Apache helicopter took hostile fire when returning to Sharon Base. Mike was killed in action that day, May 5, 1968. He was serving with A Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division

Recipient of the Aviator Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one battle star, Republic of Vietnam Combat Medal and Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. His name is located on Panel 55E, Line 23 of the Vietnam Memorial.
