Theologian, President of Union College, Schenectady, NY, Son of theologian Jonathan Edwards.
--
"Union's second president, like his famous father, was not afraid to speak his mind. His liberal thinking on the problems of negro slavery made many enemies for him. His strict orthodoxy, dividing his parish in New Haven, Conn., recalls the division which beset the Northampton church president over by Jonathan Edwards, the elder. He was born in Northampton, lived for some time with his father in Stockbridge among the Mohican Indians, where he learned their language. The 30 years of his pastorate were devoted 'to the development of doctrine by the keenest and most uncompromising logic.' In 1799 Jonathan Edwards began his short career as president of Union college. Father and son each died within two years of assuming their college duties; each of them chose for the first sermon he preached in that year, the text, 'This year thou shalt die.'"
