Mumford, June 20 – Sylvester Brownell, on of the best known and most highly respected citizens of the town of Wheatland, died last night at his home, near Smith’s Mills, two miles east of this village, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Brownell was born in Middleburg, N. Y. He left home at the age of 15 years, coming to Wheatland, where he first worked as a farmhand. In course of time by industrious habits and native ability he bought a farm, one mile east of Caledonia village, as soon became one of the prosperous farmers of the town.

In early manhood he married Margaret McPherson, a member of one of the pioneer families of Wheatland. They had four sons and one daughter. Mrs. Brownell died nearly thirty years ago. Of their family but two are living, Finley P, of Caledonia, and Dr. William G. Brownell of Rochester.

After the death of his wife the home farm was taken by his son Finley and he bought the Archibald Armstrong farm in Wheatland, and the Finch farm and the Gilman farm in the same neighborhood, residing on the Armstrong farm until his death. About five years later he was married to Miss Helen Downs, of Mumford, who with two daughters, Mary and Margaret, survive. Mr. Brownell was a deacon in the Baptist Church of this village for many years.
