Charles "Cleon" Schafer, 101 ½ , of Clay City, passed away on October 12, 2013 at Springhill Village with his family by his side.

Cleon was born April 12, 1912 in Clay County, the son of the late Adolph and Inez (Clingerman) Schafer. Cleon graduated from Clay City High School in 1932, where he was a member of the band. After high school, Cleon married the love of his life Evalyn Christine Brush on February 11, 1933. Cleon was a farmer and also a carpenter. He helped build many houses in the Clay City area.

He was a faithful member of Friendly Open Bible Community Church. In his spare time he enjoyed watching college basketball, gardening flowers, and wood working. But his greatest pride was spending time with his family.

Cleon is preceded in death by his lovely wife, Evalyn Schafer; parents, Adolph and Inez Schafer; son, Charles Clayton Schafer and his wife Sharla LeMoyne Fulford.

He is survived by his daughters, Dianne Jones and husband Donald, Phyllis Villain and husband Joseph, Patricia Sturgeon and husband Richard, Barbara Manuel and husband Wayne; grandchildren, Michelle Roach, Charles Schafer Jr, Kelli Brandon, Rita Alderson, John McHenry, Joe Villain, Kristy Burger, Mark Sturgeon, Amy Reece, Zach Manuel, Schuyler Manuel; 24 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.


Funeral Information
Service will be Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 11am at Friendly Open Bible Community Church with Pastor Jim Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 4 – 8pm at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home.
